I have always been a fan, and now we have a message platform for it on the forum. Anyone interested?

Absolutely count me in. What sort of theme or system were you thinking?

Sounds interesting. What sort of frequency were you thinking post wise and what sort of game were you thinking of? I have signed up for a few on gamersplane.com, but generally they have fallen apart early on because of post frequency or because of post length. Initially enthusiasm starts high and then dwindles.

I should probably clarify, they have tended to fall about when the post have been too frequent and/or too long. If everyone is posting multiple paragraphs frequently, the time it takes to catch up each day can spiral out of control quickly

Yes, those long-winded posts are intimidating, and people can seem to drop off the face of the earth. I've considered doing a Party of One game in order to actually have games since pbp is my only option.

In my experience, turn based PbP fizzle because some people are way into it and others are not. Setting posting requirements seems like a natural vetting process but, as Fembrek said, after the initial enthusiasm wanes the requirements become a burden or the noose that kills the game as less enthused jump ship rather than infrequently post.
My suggestion would be a rules-light, narrative system or system agnostic RP game where PCs adhere to setting. Examples would be Star Wars, Shadowrun (setting only), Golarion or Greyhawk. Maybe a cantina or adventurers tavern as a general in-character chat that can branch into more focused missions or adventures.

Do I smell an episode topic? I can’t recall any episode from any of the RPG podcasts I listen to talk about what it takes to have a successful pbp game.

Good one! I know Mike has been involved in a long term Greyhawk PbP game. The other slugs, I seriously doubt it.

Could a PbP be run on these forums or would it need something like gamersplane.com to make the most of it?

It's been a while, but from memory, the gamersplane stuff was basically a forum setup with some tools to help with RPG specific stuff like Dice rolling, so that it would be part of the post and handled by the tool. The site handled the rolls so everyone could be sure they were above board.
The community was (is I guess, it's been a while) part of the advantage of gamersplane, because you had a large group of people specifically looking for PbP, although I will say, I did seem to run into the same people in most of the games I joined, so I am not sure how many active players there were.

I mean, Orokos gives links and keeps a record of rolls. That's what the PbP Arena was meant to be for, finding and playing PbP games
